HP DeskMon: Administrator's Guide

Update Server

The Update Server allows the DeskMon Administrator to update a number of
remote DeskMon databases by sending an HP DeskManager message with the
required changes to each of them. Thus, a DeskMon Administrator could
make a change on one DeskMon system (for example, add a computer), and
then make that same change on all the other DeskMon machines in the local
network by sending a message with that change in it to those machines.

Requirements

Before the Update Server can be used, the following criteria must be met:

   * All DeskMon systems which are to be updated using the server must
be configured to "Accept Remote Configuration". For more
information, refer to the System Details menu in Chapter 3.

   * The DeskMon systems which are to be updated must use the same
Report Category names as the system from which you are sending the
       update.

   * The report categories must already be configured on the remote
       systems being updated.

Creating the Update File

The DeskMon Configurator creates a file called DMUPDATE.DESKMON.HPOFFICE
whenever the DeskMon Configurator is run and changes are made to the
DeskMon database. To create a new DMUPDATE file containing a set of
changes:

   1. Either purge or rename the current DMUPDATE file.

   2. Run the DeskMon Configurator. You must be logged on as
MGR.HPOFFICE,DESKMON or be an HP DeskManager user with SYSADMIN or
       DMADMIN (reserved group 16) capability.

            :DMCONFIG OR

            :RUN DMCONFIG.DESKMON.SYS;LIB=G

Running the DeskMon configurator will automatically create the
       DMUPDATE file.

   3. Make only those modifications which you wish to apply to the
remote systems (of course, you are applying the change to the
system you are currently on as well). For more information on
using the DeskMon Configurator, see Chapter 3.

   4. Exit the DeskMon Configurator.

NOTE Do not attempt to modify the file DMUPDATE except by using the DeskMon Configurator. If you make a mistake, undo your change and start the process again.
Sending and Applying the DMUPDATE File After creating the update file DMUPDATE.DESKMON.HPOFFICE, you can now send and apply the updates to the remote systems: 1. Log on as an HP DeskManager user with SYSADMIN or DMADMIN capability. 2. SEND the file DMUPDATE.DESKMON.HPOFFICE to the server *DMUPDATE at each of the sublocations corresponding to the remote systems to be updated. For example: HPDESK > SEND (DMUPDATE.DESKMON.HPOFFICE) TO: *DMUPDATE / HP0000/HU *DMUPDATE / HP0000/33 *DMUPDATE / HP0000/F2 // MESSAGE > MAIL The update file is sent to the DeskMon Update Servers addressed in the message. The update file is then applied automatically by each of the remote Update Servers. Results of the Updates Each of the remote systems will attempt to apply the DeskMon updates when it receives the message. Each system will create two reply messages for the update message: * A Good Reply - A message containing a record of all the updates from the update message which have been successfully applied to this system. This is sent to the local General Delivery for the node being updated, to let the local system Administrator know what changes have been made. * A Bad Reply - A message containing a record of all the updates from the update message which have not been successfully applied to this system. This is returned to the sender of the updates, to report all problems in applying the updates.
