• Networking converts a shelf full of PC's into a cluster.

• All our clusters use at least switched Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) as node interconnect.

  • Cheap and well supported.

• Gigabit ethernet natural successor.

  • Still too expensive as default node interconnect (but prices coming down quickly).
  • Mainly used as backbone or for uplink to mass storage systems.
  • Used in very demanding clusters (interactive data analysis).
  • Drivers for Linux already available (AceNIC, Yellowfin).
