Static Rate Limits for Many Flows On one link with Routers or L3+ Switches
WAN, MAN or Campus Backbone
But, can be difficult to manage when:
- Many traffic classes to define
- User requirements change frequently
- Overloads occur (What happens to excess in each class ?)
Can not be done with L2 switches
But some L3 switches can do it at L2 (e.g., CoreBuilder 3500)
A rate limit of “other traffic”
can act like a reservation
for the remaining traffic
If all traffic is rate limited
and total is less than 100% of link capacity then each “class” has a defacto
