DNS Namespace Design Requirements and Recommendations

• Required:

  • Must support Service Location record (SRV RR), RFC 2052
  • Dynamic Update protocol, RFC 2136
  • MS-DNS not required

• Recommended:

  • No pre-existing DNS infrastructure
    • Deploy Microsoft DNS Server
  • Pre-exising DNS infrastructure
    • Does server that owns <domain name> support SRV RR, dynamic update? NOTE: Windows NT 4.0 does not meet these requirements
    • Ownership = name falls within zone loaded by server
